Rainbow In Your Hand

by on Nov.10, 2008, under Digital Art, Reviews

I stumbled across this clever little booklet and thought it was pretty amazing. Now I wonder what we could be seeing next? We used to do this as kids, animating stick men and other drawings, but I have never seen one in color. I always had fun doing this and I hope this makes it way back into the mainstream.

New Rising Form of Graffiti

by on Nov.09, 2008, under Digital Photography, Reviews

I can’t believe I am writing about this, I can’t believe this is happening but it is very cool and great to see! What can you possibly say if you entered a staircase to find the cold metal handrail wrapped in colorful yarn? Other than smile what would you do if you are walking through a park and come upon a tree wrapped in brilliant colors in the dead of winter? Take a look at this “movement?” and see that it isn’t just about pot holders and blankets anymore. I applaud this creative graffiti, or rather public art form.

Simpson’s Safety Posters

by on Nov.07, 2008, under Reviews

Another example of the Simpson’s being used as a role model? What’s next? Bart Simpson on the Republican ticket?  Will this honestly force us to now take health and safety seriously by having cartoon characters that we laugh at when they hurt themselves pushing this message? I think if we want to get serious about safety then put actual images of dudes falling off the ladder and impaling themselves, or images of what nuclear radiation blisters on your face would look like. Why are we afraid of them being graphic? I don’t think this is a laughing matter but I do agree that the old posters floating around the work centers do need to be updated.

Jack-O-Lanterns!

by on Oct.25, 2008, under Reviews

I never new the legend and old folk tales of the Jack-O-Lantern until I just did some research as I put these images together.

Jack-O-Lanterns represented the souls of the departed loved ones and were set on porches and placed in windows. They also protected against malevolent spirits or goblins freed from the dead to wreak havoc on unsuspecting citizens.

Several version of an Irish legend tells of Jack, who invited the Devil to have a drink. When it came time to pay, he convinced the Devil to change into a sixpence, but instead of paying for the drink Jack pocketed the sixpence and kept it stored beside a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back. Jack made a deal with the Devil before letting him free that the Devil could not harass him. When Jack died and was turned back from the Gates of Heaven. He went to the Gates of Hell and the Devil turned him away, as the Devil promised not to claim his soul. Jack didn’t want to leave because it was dark and he couldn’t find his way. The Devil tossed Jack a glowing coal and Jack put it inside a turnip, and ever since with this “Jack O’ Lantern”, Stingy jack’s lonely soul has been roaming the faces of this earth.

Another version has Jack tricking Beezelbub into climbing a tree, where upon Jack then carved an image of a cross in the tree’s trunk, trapping the devil in his high perch. Jack made a deal with the devil that, if he would never tempt him again, he would promise to let Lucifer down from the tree. According to the folk tale, after Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the devil. The rest of the legend remains the same.

It is an interesting read to go through the different legends but we’re here to see some great carvings!
